Jenny competes at Danish Eurovision
Feb 27th
Congratulations to Jenny for a stunning performance in the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, the competition to select who will represent Denmark at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The event was a one-night affair and Jenny was a wildcard entry, as were 3 others of the total 10 participants.
Unfortunately, Jenny wasn’t amongst the top four finalists. The winner of the contest was “A Friend in London” with their song New Tomorrow.
I’m sure you’ll agree that Jenny’s song Let Your Heart Be Mine is an amazing song, and Jenny performed it brilliantly. The song is available in the Danish iTunes. If you’re not in Denmark… Yarr.
Competing in Eurovision is something Jenny has always wanted to do (presumably with Ace of Base) but it had never worked out. Denmark was a natural choice for Jenny as the country had always been a lot more receptive of Ace of Base than Sweden was; it was the country where Ace of Base first struck big. And even though she wasn’t the winner tonight, she impressed a hell of a lot of fans with an even-better-than-usual performance. After the competition she posted this message on Facebook: You make my broken dreams fly again! Thank you for support! I had a blast!!
Thank you to Elio for uploading the video.
Thank you to Mikkel for providing the lyrics.
Jenny – City Interview
Nov 26th
We haven’t heard much from Jenny in the past month. She has done the odd lecture and church concert, but no major news. Her Facebook has also been relatively quiet, and her website blog only has two new posts since the three she did the week her album came out. Hungry for Jenny news, I did manage to come across this one interview on Sara’s blog. I hope she doesn’t mind me posting it here:
After the October 9th performance in Karlstad, Jenny mentioned an interview she gave for a Stockholm paper named City. The newspaper published the interview on October 14th in their daily paper on page 31.

Life according to Jenny
I have my feet on the ground
Fame – Jenny Berggren’s biggest achievement is to be the mother of small children. In the book "Vinna Hela Världen", she writes about those crazy years with the internationally acclaimed group Ace of Base – and the price she paid.
1. What is true happiness?
Joy, that is to say the happiness that lasts when unhappiness is a fact.
2. What is your biggest fear?
To never be able to laugh again.
3. What side of yourself do you like the least?
That I dont realize everything I am. Many people would lead you to believe that you’re worth very little, when in reality it’s just the opposite.
4. What side of others do you like the least?
Indifference
5. Which living person do you admire the most?
Jesus
6. How do you feel right now?
Excited. Nothing else.
7. When do you lie?
In my head, a million times a day, at least.
8. What qualities do you appreciate most in men?
Strength and leadership. Wisdom to know that they have a need for qualities women possess.
9. What qualities do you appreciate most in women?
Love and the ability to understand the whole picture. The realization that they are best when it comes to these qualities.
10. Which words or phrases do you use too often?
Thank you, sorry and like.
11. Who or what is the love of your life?
My family and the silver spoon given to me at my baptism.
12. What talent would you like to have?
To be restful and to be good at walking on a tightrope.
13. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
To be free of tics, maybe? I would like to be able to… [???]
[Umm...Would anyone like to take a swing at translating that line? I clearly don't get it.]
14. What is your biggest achievement?
Giving birth. Being a Mom of small kids. Without a doubt! I’m also proud that I was part of the whole circus with Ace of Base and still have both feet on the ground.
15. If you died and came back as a person or thing, what would you choose to come back as?
I would never want to come back. I believe that the day I die will be my best day.
16. Which of your posessions do you prize the most?
My wedding ring and… my car. With my job as a lecturer, I need it as much as an on-call doctor. Without it, I can’t work. I live in the wrong city…
17. What is the worst thing a person can experience?
To lose someone they love or believe in.
18. What is your favourite pastime?
To let people know that God never leaves them and never stops loving them no matter what they do.
19. What is your most noticeable feature?
My remarkably characteristic nose.
20. Who are the biggest heroes in your life?
My children. And Desmond Tutu.
21. How do you want to die?
Without leaving anyone alone.
22. What is your motto?
Smile big and walk fast.

Jenny – "My Story" CD Booklet Liner Notes
Nov 6th
–Free Me–
"Wanting badly to break free from contracts and all the things that held me down so much, I suffered a lot and was stuck. The bruises never seemed to go away; instead I felt they grew worse. The days before the knife attack on me I had the strongest feeling riding on the elevator up to the Christ The Redeemer Statue on our visit to Rio de Janeiro. I asked God to hold my love like that elevator held me. I needed his hands that held me that would not ever hurt me. I believe Go has those hands"
–Dying to Stay Alive–
"I see this song as a description of the perfect peace: true peace is not the absence of pain or fear or troubles. True peace is to find peace in the eye of the storm or to not be afraid when signs are showing that this world is quaking. To sleep in solitude although you have once been awakened by a knife to your throat. I want to be dancing no matter what happens. Dancing is a way to express gratitude in the Hebrew language. God has told me to not be afraid, 366 times in my bible, one time for each day. So I say thank you for giving me peace. Dancing."–Numb–
"It is a difference between being nice to someone and loving someone. Love hurts sometimes. Based on free will terms, we can’t control it. It’s for free, but at the same time can be the most expensive pearl to purchase. It’s as difficult as the essence of all the problems you’ve ever had and as easy as breathing. It’s both. A paradox amongst others. I am created to love, like a capsule of heaven."
–Here I Am–
"Taken from the book of Psalms 139 in The Bible. I read it with new eyes in Montreal, when I was on the top of our success in Ace of Base, but I had been feeling more lonesome than ever. No matter how far I am from His love, it can always reach me. His love is like lighting a lamp in a dark room. That is how I look upon God. He is love."–Beat of my Heart–
"Could I really tell the picture in the mirror apart rom who I was on the inside? Was I slowly becoming that two-dimensional, superficial person in the magazines I always gave away as being one out of four in Ace of Base? The light of truth is stronger than the ones that blind me on stage, making me see no one else. He has given me a new song to sing. The old ones you already know."
–Natural Superstar–
"The beauty from within is in the Song of Songs where God speaks to each one of us, saying: "My dove in the clefts of the rock, in the hidden places on the mountainside, show me your face, let me hear your voice; For your voice is so sweet, And your face is so lovely." Or as I sing: "You don’t have to hide yourself no more". It is my love song to all you fans out there, hiding away because someone/something else makes you feel unloved or less worth."
–Going Home–
"I took the turn to Nashville to write this song together with my husband, Jacob Petrén and Sam Mizell, in 2006. I am going home one day. I can never say when or where, but I know where I am going. Going Home is also a reflection of all the times I longed for home when I was out working with Ace of Base. Recording this song I pray for all who are parted from their loved ones".
The final page in the booklet gives thanks to those involved with the album, and finishes with:
"And last but not least my dear mom.
Thank you for my family. They make my day. I pray that you bless us all."
Jenny TV interview translated

Thank you so much to Tiiger who has managed to add subtitles to this TV interview. This screen on Swedish television roughly one month ago. In the interview Jenny discusses how it felt to “be replaced” by two new younger girls. She also discusses the knife incident from 1994.

"Ulf prepared to fight an uphill battle" – Aftonbladet
Nov 4th
Ace of Base are back – with the style of 1992
Then: Two 20-year-olds with the odds against him. Now: Two 40-year-olds with the odds against him. In between, Ace of Base sold 60 million records – and lost two singers.
It is 21 October 2010. The nightclub Café Opera in Stockholm celebrates 30 years – and on stage are Ulf Ekberg, 39, and Jonas Berggren, 43, along with two much younger, beautiful model, singers. There is a new constellation, without sisters Jenny and Malin Berggren.
But they still call themselves the Ace of Base. And the music sounds like early 90′s.
- It was a very difficult audience to practice before, everyone who was there’s the best at what they do. But it was special, I’ve personally been a frequent guest at the café," says Ulf Ekberg few days later.
Ace of Base has recently released their fifth album, "Golden Ratio". And the group that 15 years ago flew around the world with their mega hits, are planning to go out on an extended world tour next Spring .
Enough money for life
But after eight years silence, this is not an updated 2010 pop. Instead, they have gone back to square one.
- We are much more like we were in 1992 than we have been. Then we had no record label or producer involved. It was Jonas and me against the world. We did what we felt was right and everyone else thought was wrong" said Ulf Ekberg.
And with hindsight, it is understandable. It was the debut album "Happy Nation" from 1993 that the Gothenburg quartet became known throughout the world – and the two male songwriters and singers are multi-millionaires. With the money from Ace of Base record sales, they will be able to live their lives.
Began to escape the attention
But with subsequent albums it became increasingly difficult to achieve the same success – and simultaneously Malin Berggren began to shun attention.
When she left the group in 2007 for good, she had been for a long time hiding in the back of the stage during the concerts and has not done an interview since 1997. One of the reasons for her fear of the spotlight may have been the knife attack that little sister Jenny was subjected to by a stalker in 1994.
- We actually had a huge mess since day one, it was a test to become a world leader and a superstar. I like to travel and meet people, but Malin did not think it was fun at all. She was not feeling well", said Ulf Ekberg.
And the turmoil continues. In connection with the Ace of Base comeback tour of2007-2009, the remaining members started to work on new material. But according to Jenny Berggren, she was not involved in the song writing. So she went for a solo career.
- They have not wanted me to, "she said recently to Aftonbladet in conjunction with the launch of her own album.
Prepared to fight
Ulf Ekberg, however, blames the fact that Ace of Base’s music calls for two female voices – and that Jenny Berggren refused to share the singing with someone else:
- If you have only one lead singer and she never gets to the studio, it’s not easy being a band. The ideal would be to bring in another girl, but she wanted to be alone.
And now the two artists try to gain benefit from the Ace of Base name – although Jenny Berggren clearly expressed that she feels the group, with the new singers, should call themselves something else.
- I hope that these girls are fine", she says.
Ulf Ekberg is prepared to fight an uphill battle.
- There will probably always be opinions about us in this country. We are definitely don’t have enough cred to get with the establishment", he says.

Jenny – Release and Promotion of My Story
Oct 20th
It’s been an exciting week for Jenny fans with the release of her fantastic solo album, My Story.
Check this page for information about the album, including my review. Overall the fans have been very impressed with My Story. It has been described as deep and meaningful, much like The Bridge.
All the lyrics have been added to this site – view them here.
JennyBerggren.com has been revamped. It looks great and has a lot of information including a blog.
Sara, Anja and Jessi have been in Sweden for the week, attending various promotional activities with Jenny. Sara’s blog about the experience is very insightful and offers a great account of everything she witnessed. There are also videos with Jenny on her YouTube channel. See Tiiger’s YouTube channel too.
There have been a few articles and reviews about Jenny’s new album. As has been the case with previous Ace of Base albums, the Swedish press did not give it good reviews. When interviewed about Ace.of.Base, Jenny said “We have a knot right now, but I hope we can sort it out. I will just say that the way Jonas and Ulf have chosen to move on was not my favourite.” [source] When asked if she would re-join Ace of Base, she responded with (rough translation) “Not right now. I’m trying to stand on my own, for I must think a bit that there is a sinking ship”. When asked about Malin she replied “She wouldn’t want me to talk about her but we’re fine”. [source]
She has also done radio promotion, including an interview and preview of Dying to Stay Alive the night before the album release, and TV appearances in Sweden including TV4′s Förkväll show, and this fantastic performance on ExpressenTV.
