Jenny is currently working very hard giving interviews to radio stations, newspapers and websites all over Europe, promoting her new single “Here I Am” and answering questions about the current status of Ace of Base. A small selection of transcripts and links follow (there are many more)
From Croatia:
Sweden is a country known for many famous pop groups like Abba, Roxette, Ace of Base, The Cardigans. While Abba lit dance floor and Zaria seventies and eighties, the nineties have certainly been Ace of Base. From The Netherlands:
Ace of Base comeback, with or without Jenny Berggren
The pop reggae of Ace of Base controlled the charts in the early 90s. With single’s like ATSW,WOF,HN,TS who all reached the top 5. Don’t turn around reached number 7. The album sold 30 million. In home county Sweden the success of the hit machine lasted till the early 2000’s, but since a year of 7 it had been quiet around Ulf Ekberg, Jonas Berggren and his sisters Linn and Jenny.
But the quiet will not last long, if Jenny gets here way. This week here first solo single “here I Am” will be released. In September the album My Life will be released. She also hints on a comeback of the famous Swedish group. According to jenny she thinks ace of base will come with a new album in 2011. If she will contribute herself she cannot yet reveal. When she knows she will let it know.
Jenny who left AOB last year was inspired by Donna summer to start here own solo career. She saw Donna perform life in 2005 at the NOT in Antwerp. “She is already in here 60s and had a turbulent life” “But on stage she was untouchable”. “She really touched me”. Jenny and Donna became friend, a friendship that if jenny had here way will once result in a cooperation. “My dream would be to stand with here on the stage”.
In the small box: Jenny Berggren, age 38, lives in Goteborg, in the news this well for releasing here first single “here I am”
From Greece:
Interview with Jenny: Danai Alaska/ Josephine Camitz/ Text: Natasha Papachristou
In the beginning there was ABBA. A few years later Swedish music scene reveals another exportable
product, Roxette, while at the beginning of the 90s Ace Of Base make a grand appearance.
The story of Ace Of Base is, like other related band members, a family affair coming to surface
thanks to one song: ‘All that she wants’. What followed was definitely not in the group’s best intentions.Protagonists of the story, the three Berggren siblings; Jonas, Malin and Jenny, together
with their friend Ulf Ekberg. Ever since the release of their first single, the four-piece band became
frustrated with their birthplace and decided to move to Denmark. Although the ‘Wheel of Fortune’
didn’t bring them the fortune they had wished for, it was their neighbouring country that provided
the right place for their efforts to flourish. It all happened with ‘Mr Ace’, their second single, under
a different name. ‘Mr Ace’ was renamed to ‘All That She Wants’ and such was the name of their
album. All they ever wanted was to release an album -and so they did- all they ever wanted was
to become famous -and they really succeed in that too. Their triumph literally spread around the
world making it the most commercial debut album in history with even Britney Spears recording
a cover version. After all, ‘All That She Wants’ is about girls who know how to assert, girls without
limits who enjoy each moment and who eventually get what they want. These are the girls who
stand out of the crowd, who charm, come dominant but… are alone. And yes they do stay late at
night, but no girl wants to be alone. The first member who left the group was a girl. Three albums
onwards Malin leaves while the two remaining members tour, release a ‘best of’ and stay together
till 2009 when they finally realise themselves that their time was out. However the two boys still
insist on the same recipe, creating a new group with two more female singers. Jenny on the other
hand has gone solo while Malin -the frontwoman- ‘leads a lonely life’ away from the public eye.
She probably knows better and maybe this is all that she wants.Jenny from Ace to Base goes solo
OZON Traced Jenny Berggren, Ace of Base brunette singer and asked eight questions about
all that she wants. Why did you decided to go solo?
It has been a dream since I first started out as a singer in Ace of Base and it is finally coming true!
How would you describe your upcoming album?Pop and Pop. I am stretching the boarders this time and I am free to do what I want.
Some harder music and some softer: I can´t wait to show it to the world. How do you feel about Ace Of Base hiring two new female singers?
Ace Of Base are by law only us three original members, and the new project that
Ulf and Joans are working with is almost as exiting as mine.Which is your favourite cover of ‘All that she wants’?
I don’t know.. My own?
What do you miss most from those great times, where Ace of Base was the
biggest pop phenomenon? The red carpets, no I miss seeing my fans.
What does a girl want from a pop song?
She needs to be enlightened. She wants air under her feet. What have you brought with you from the experience with Ace of Base?
Now I have got some experience of this business and I am longing to get
some more. But what I do know is that fame disappears like a flying balloon
in the air. Its only the real things, the small values in life that counts. What are your future visions today as a solo artist compared to back in the
days when you were with Ace of Base?Today I am happy for what I have got and what I have achieved. Back then I guess I
was sort of petrified…
From Swedish Radio:
15 May 2010
After the news break, you’ll hear from today’s guest who has just arrived in time – with luggage, newly arrived to Stockholm.
-You bet. I’m here now from Göteborg and it’s great fun to be here now.
A real world star here on P4.
-Well, why not?
The life of a world star seems like a dream for many people. For AOB Jenny, the fairytale became a nightmare when a fan came too close and broke into her home. In a few minutes, you’ll meet Jenny Berggren who is now standing on her own, here on P4 Premiär, your guide to pop culture’s star-filled galaxy.
(Song break)
Today’s guest describes herself as a hard-working mom with two kids who likes English humor and dislikes hidden agendas. As a child, she dreamed about dancing. Today, she dreams about being able helping just one person find the good through her words and music. She would rather listen to Emrik and cheers for people who tell the truth. Her best hidden talent is that she sings the voices of the Cinderella mice better than most. And her life’s motto reads, dig where you’re standing and bloom where God plants you.
Today’s guest on P4 Premiär is Jenny Berggren. Welcome to the program!
-Thank you so much.
It’s very nice to see you Jenny. You look like you did back in the 90s when you started. You’ve become a mom and you’ve been able to do a lot of things like write a book. You’ve been able to create a new album now. We’re going to talk about that, among other things. How are things?
-Yes, I think things are good. If you don’t sleep much, you don’t get much done. It’s just that way. And I don’t think I’ve ever had this much fun.
How come?
-I don’t know, but maybe it’s because I’m able to do my own thing. The things that are happening are the things I’ve put into motion. Those things I am passionate about – those are the things I can work for and are those things that can bear fruit in other places. It is so exciting to see and those questions that are put on my heart are those things that can be brought up one at a time and whatever happens, happens. But it’s from me in any case. And I had positive intentions before I tried to do it, anyway.
You have written a book about this, about the good and bad sides of fame and all of your experiences. How do you feel when you see today’s hysteria around the Idol programs and all that. How do you see it with the perspective you have?
-Well, I know that when I was in the old Cherion studio, I was able to hear a recording of a 16-year-old girl named Britney Spears and on that day, I began to pray for her. I thought this…
What did you pray about?
-That she would have help and support from people around her. That she could grow into her role, her responsibilities.
Did you understand then that something big was going to happen?
-For sure. And it became something big. She ended up being one of the world’s biggest stars for awhile.
But this was before she broke through?
-Yep, I only saw a 16-year-old girl and I’ve been 16 myself and if I would’ve gone out into this world when I was 16, when I thought it was tough when I was 21 when it started, yeah. But I know that I’ve had her on my heart since then. And when new Idols come along, I pray for them too because I know it’s not easy.
Does God hear your prayers?
-Oh yes. He does.
Do you think Britney has gotten enough help?
-No, but maybe it shows just how difficult this branch is.
But now you’re going to go out into it again. What type of tools are you going to use this time, because you’re going out on your own?
-I think that my tools this time are my experiences. It’s like I have been in a karate match since I was 21 without knowing anything, without any arms or legs. So I have learned most of the different moves and the types of holds in a way.
So you could say you have a black belt these days?
-For sure, right? Red ?? anyway. But I know many of the holds I can use, and need to use.
(Plays Here I Am)
Here I Am with the guest of the day, Jenny Berggren.
I promised the listeners, or I threatened you about seeing what you can do. The first time I met you at a TV studio, about twenty years ago, you busted out into mouse.
-Into mouse? (laughs)
The mouse song. (both laugh) And that was about twenty years ago. The beginning of the 90s. How did it sound? Do you remember?
-I do.
Do you still have the falsetto?
-I still have the falsetto. I’ve not..I’ve not yet registered this speeding puck that has suddenly been directed at my head.
I’ve cast it right at you.
-We can certainly see here. Now is the moment of truth… (sings the Cinderella song and breaks before finishing)
You should get a Grammy for the best Cinderella mouse song. This is really fantastic.
-I didn’t really make it all the way up to the top. It was a little too high or it was a little too.. haven’t been singing today on the train. (She took the train to STHLM).
Totally unreal, I think. How do you do that?
-You say, baaah, except you say baaah (w/ fast vibrato, high falsetto)
Now we have to have a serious conversation.
-Of course, sorry.
No, that was me who asked you to do it. That’s life. It’s up and it’s down. And high and wide. And small and big. I was thinking about this terrible incident. If you Google your name, it comes up everywhere, this terrible thing that happened when a fan got too close. There’s been a lot written about it. A German fan who got in with a knife. In your home.
-In my home.
How have you somehow, learned to equip yourself? How has this incident affected you?
-Well, when you’re off the center, you’re off the center. And I know that I looked at the two different Jenny’s in my life for a long time. The one before the attack and the one after. And I know that I became really tired of having that hole in the middle of myself where I wasn’t one person, so I said to my Creator: "You have the diagrams to my life. Can’t we fix this hole?" And, I don’t know. In some way, the one up there pointed to himself, I think. That he knows what’s happening. And I was quite satisfied with that because there are certain things that we humans can’t measure. Some strong difficulties that we can’t find words for, as you can see now. And there’s surely an unseen reality that doesn’t need the hands of a person to piece together and heal wounds and reaches those places human hands cannot. And that was something I had through faith because…
Your faith in God has affected you a lot. Has it helped you with, not just this, if you know what I mean, but to also have some type of armor for your difficult job?
-Yes, I think I’m no longer timid. It’s said that we’re sent out like sheep among wolves and I realized that around 93, that it definitely was that way. So it means I keep an eye on what I’m allowing into my life, what I’m listening to, what I’m reading, what I’m taking in. What is it I’m thinking about, what type of information I’m choosing to take in.
(Song break)
Today’s guest on P4 Premiär is none other than Jenny Berggren.
Jenny, we take questions in this program from the previous week’s guest. It’s someone you know. Listen to his question for you.
Hi Jenny. This is Andreas. I have a question for you. Do you think that happiness and success go together?
That was a philosophical question from Andreas Carlsson.
-Do I think that happiness and success go together? Yes and no. For the first part, happiness isn’t a good word, I think. I don’t look for happiness. I look for blessings.
What is the difference?
-Blessings is what remain when unhappiness comes. The joy that builds a foundation. So the question is, what is more important? Blessings or success?
What is your answer then?
-But it’s a very good question because happiness and success go together. You’re totally happy when things go well. And you’re not happy when things don’t go well. So, yes, happiness and success go together in that way, but blessings and success don’t go together.
Andreas was so eager. We usually don’t allow two questions, but I couldn’t resist his second question because it’s so nice. Listen.
Jenny, you and I worked at the same place with the fantastic Denniz Pop. Can’t you share a few memories that are fun for the listeners to hear about, this fantastic man Denniz Pop, Dag Volle.
-Yes, Dag Volle.
Who meant a lot to many people.
-Yes, he did.
He died far, far too young.
-He is a dad, of course. And still is. A father who is missed. I have a father who has passed, so I think about the children. It’s a big, strange thing to lose one’s father. I think we’ll all meet Dag again in Heaven and that will be fun.
Can you say something for the listeners who don’t have a connection to him what it was that made him so big? Not only as a songwriter but also as a person?
-He had an unbelievably beautiful smile that went from ear to ear. And the fun thing was, that even though I was a young, young girl in that context, a small comment from me could make his smile break out, even though no one else was laughing. So he saw things no one else saw. And that was part of his greatness. He saw things no one else did. He was also funny and a joker too. I remember how he could stop a recording and say, "No, Jenny now we’ve worked a bit. Now I have to make a prank call."
In the middle of everything?
-Yes, exactly. It was important to call someone just to joke around.
He had a little Kalle Sändare in him.
-Certainly, he had lots of Sändare in him. It somehow made the whole thing less dramatic. You were supposed to sit there and sing well in the studio, do a good job, and it made the whole thing somehow "ha!", you know that easy laugh that just happens. And then you’d listen to this fun prank call. He would sit there and laugh and it would sound so great. My microphone was connected to their studio room and he sat there and rolled in laughter and then you just heard this little snicker and he would snicker a lot. It was fun. There’s a little memory, his mischief. And I also really remember his funeral. It was absolutely one of my most difficult songs I’ve ever performed.
What did you sing?
-I sang "Var inte rädd, det finns ett hemligt tecken". 256 in the psalm book. And I don’t think I’ve ever sang such a difficult song in my entire life.
But it worked.
-Yes, it did. I learned a few pointers from my song teacher who stood in the background, Sanna Hultén, and helped.
How to sing without breaking up.
-How to sing without breaking.. or how to sing when you’re breaking up. Exactly. It was special just to see it, those few people you wanted to reach. I think they heard it. It was a very special moment. The whole funeral was very special.
I felt like I wanted to cry, hearing that.
-Mmm.
Thank you.
-Thank you also to Andreas for a good question.
Next week’s guest, Jenny, is an actress who is "still going strong". It’s Meg Westergren who you get to ask a question of.
-Congratulations. And congrats to me who gets to ask a question. Let’s see here. Meg, it’s unbelievable that I get to turn to you so directly because I have watched you since I was a little youngster. When you have been on the silver screen or on the TV screen, I stopped to watch. You have the it-factor and you’ve always had that "it". How would you describe a person who has "it"?
What an exciting question. It was fun having you here on P4 Premiär.
-Yes, it was really fun.
I want to say good luck with everything and hold on tight when the wind picks up again.
-I agree and thank you because I know I need it.
Jenny Berggren, how wonderful that you could take part in the program.
Thank you so much.
From Sweden:
Jenny Berggren: "I could not afford to wait"
Years of Ace of Base was not only success and happiness – without even waiting for something that might never be.
Now make Jenny Berggren solo career as a new and stronger man.
- From being a torn person, I am full again.
FaktaJenny Berggren born in 1972 and formed the beginning of the 1990s
Ace of Base, together with their brothers and sisters Malin and Jonas Berggren and Ulf Ekberg. The group has sold over 30 million records worldwide.
Jenny Berggren has now husband and two children and is active as a performer, songwriter, author and lecturer.
Last year, Jenny Berggren’s autobiographical book "Winning the world", which among other things, depicts the success rates.
Jenny Berggren’s new single "Here I am" is released next week.
But first. What is the future of Ace of Base, one of the biggest music exports with improbable success worldwide? Jonas Berggren and Ulf Ekberg is currently working on new material for an unknown name. Jenny makes a solo career.
Hoping to Ace of Base againWill Ace of Base to release an album again?
- I really hope. It is my goal.
- I felt that I had neither money nor time to be part of a slow process in which it might be something. I wanted to do something that worked, came out and I’m at. Now I had a chance.
"Painful stuff""Free Me", from the first solo project, leaked to the fans on the web. Now, therefore, the single "Here I Am" as Jenny Berggren describes as radio-friendly and foamy.
But expect more of the album.
- The book depicts, and the disc will be a companion piece to the book, is very painful stuff, and then helps it not to be foamy. Then there must be something that shows that this girl had hurt, and had fought hard and worn with their self-image, "says Jenny Berggren.
Too bad of celebrityHer autobiographical book "Winning the world" came last fall. In it she describes the particular pain of mega celebrity caused her and her parents in the attack which left deep scars.
But now Jenny Berggren is therefore ready to take the spotlight again.
- It’s so nice because I can do it here and in the pits, I will not fall in. Now I can give myself out and to really be who I am.FOOTNOTE: The album "My Story" coming this fall. May 19 released the single "Here I Am"
